A question from a new powerhome user:

I'm getting a lot of Insteon In 'Direct ACK' events in my event log (on the order of 10-20/min) so that powerhome performance seems to be degraded, not to mention my events log blowing up. Any ideas on how to stop these? I seem to remember reading something about this in another post a month or two ago, but I can't find it any more.

Here is a sample of one of these events:

Incoming Insteon received on Insteon DM controller POWERLINC USB. From Address:[XX.XX.XX] To Address:[YY.YY.YY] Flags:[33] Cmd1:[43] Cmd2:[0]. Decode: Direct ACK. From: UPPER HALL SOUTH To: POWERLINC1, Peek Addr

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

The message is a response (ACK) to Powerhome2 Peeking data (cmd1:43 0x2B - read data) from memory of UPPER HALL SOUTH.

Since Powerhome2 does not create Event Log entries for background activity such as reading a device link database this should be coming from something that was initiated from a Timed Event, Trigger or Macro. What else does the Event Log indicate is going on at the same time. The message before this one should be an Outbound Direct message with the actual Peek address that is being read. All I can tell from the ACK is that a byte of 00 was being returned but not from what memory location.   Knowing the sequence of memory addresses that are being accessed may also provide some clues as to what is being done.

Also, what type of device is UPPER HALL SOUTH.

Thanks for the quick reply. Nice to know that a newbie like me has a place to get questions answers.

To address your second question first, all these devices on my network are Icon switches connected to a 2414u PLC. As to something triggering the peek, I can't see anything. Here is a somewhat shortened version of the event log from when I restarted PH this evening (all I deleted were some similar events to keep this post somewhat reasonable in terms of length)

The only thing I see besides the Peek Addr is that it seems like each of those events occurs after a 'Set Addr MSB', but that is also an "Insteon In" event.

Some more background that may help. I recently moved PH from the computer I was using for evaluating the program to a new system. I didn't have this issue on my old system, but that was an XP box that is getting a bit flakey. I moved the database directory and re-downloaded the app back on the PLC (not sure of that was necessary, but in my attempts to get rid of this issue, it didn't sound like it would hurt). Maybe I need to do something else?

Thanks again for helping out.

Andy

The Set MSB command is Set Most Significant Byte. This is the first command that is issued when reading device memory. The subsequent Peek commands set the Least Significant Byte of the memory address and the content of that memory location is returned. A Set MSB followed by two Peek commands are being issued to what looks like each device defined to the PLC. These activities are being initiated by the PLC itself, not explicitly by PowerHome2.   Not sure why. Since it is the PLC and not Powerhome issuing these commands I cannot tell what memory addresses are accessed. You can start SDM3 manually before starting Powerhome. Open the SDM3 window by double clicking on the blue T shaped ICON in the system tray before starting Powerhome. This may show the outbound commands being issued by the PLC. It has been a long time since I ran PowerHome with a PLC. I would assume that once the PLC has cycled through the devices defined to it this activity would stop.

You said you "downloaded the app back on the PLC". What app are you referring to.

I might suggest you also download core apps and add min again since you reinstalled PH. May not fix it but just one more base to cover.

Pete has a good suggestion. The other thing that might provide some information is the Insteon Raw Log produced by PowerHome. The more I think about the Event Log the ACKs may be in response to something that Powerhome issued during initialization that it does not trace in the Event Log (as it does not trace background activity in the Event Log) but should show up in the Insteon Raw Log. One of the things that Powerhome does do is check the link database level to see if anything changed outside of Powerhome. That might be what is happening and would likely not be in the Event Log but should be in the Insteon Raw Log.

Do you run with the Status Scan option checked. If so turn it off and see if that stops the device activity.

Andy, what release of PowerHome are you running? I turned on Status Scan (which I don't normally run with) and the Set MSB, Peek sequence is somewhat similar to yours in the Insteon Raw Log but I have no entries being logged in the Event Trace. I am running with a PLM so I cannot duplicate your environment exactly.

Lee, I can’t help but think that the PLC is looping around with its DB because there may be a mismatch in its array. If you need me to test with a PLC I have that capability. We’ll just have to wait and see what Andy comes up with next.

Pete, I’m pretty sure what Andy is seeing is the normal Status Scan Set MSB, Peek, Peek sequence that is shown below. These are from my Insteon Raw Log file so they are top to bottom. Since the ACKs are not being traced in my Event Log it could be that PowerHome is logging the ACKs in the Event Log because it is a PLC (which is probably a bug) or perhaps Andy is not on 2.1b. If you are of a mind set to run with the PLC for a short test with Status Scan enabled it would show whether the ACK Event Log entries are only when using a PLC or there is some other variable involved on Andy’s system.   Seeing the Insteon Raw Log from Andy’s system I think will show that PowerHome is issuing the Set MSB, Peek, Peek sequence and the only question is why the ACK Event Log entries are being generated.

Lee, I’ll test that this weekend if Andy doesn’t provide more insight be between now and then.

Thanks Pete. These commands are looking at the link database link records of 0F.00.F5, followed by an Insteon ON/Off command sequence to 0E.A0.C0, followed by commands looking at the link database link records of 0F.C5.57. I added comments at each Outbound and Inbound sequence as to what is happening. The commands associated with checking the link database level are not in this sequence (Set MSB, Peek, Peek of database level).

A lot of interesting posts, some of which I didn't quite follow. However, I did start the SDM by itself, and the log window shows that things are very quiet until I start PH. At that point a lot of activity shows up until I quit PH again. Here is a snippet:

Not sure what to make of it yet, but it looks like it is some interaction between PH and the PLC.

I've tried downloading the 'core app' several times, with and without doing a subsequent 'add min'. I'm about to try clearing out the links as well and then letting it rediscover these.
When I look at the raw logs, I do seen an occasional TX command float by, amid a sea of RXs. The TX command is a 'p31:srir=...." where .... is a set of 9 8-bit groups in hex.   Actually, there are also other TX cmds. I see a 'sendinsteonraw=....' and a 'srq:srir'. No idea what these mean, and none of these get reflected in the event log.
I'd be happy to provide more information, but I'm not sure what is required. Oh, and since somebody asked, I'm running PH 2.1b, which I think is the latest one. I also usually run with status-scan off, which was another question.

Thanks again.

My guess is you won’t see any activity until PH is started. I would suggest that is normal. What isn’t is your seeing activity in the Event Log without accompanying Insteon Outgoing.

Andy, This is standard “Status Scan” activity of Powerhome. It checks the status of each device and whether the link database level has changed. The Powerhome “Insteon Raw Log” will show the same Outbound and Inbound activity.

If you did not see this activity on your previous PH install you had the “Status Scan” option turned off. I do not run with Status Scan option set because of the volume of Insteon traffic it generates.

What release of Powerhome are you running? The only question is why the ACKs are being traced in your Event Log as they are not traced in my Event Log on 2.1b. The underlying Insteon message traffic is expected with Status Scan.

Lee, Andy is running 2.1B. Andy, is Insteon Out checked in the Setup Logs screen? Check the Insteon Explorer and make sure Status Scan is unchecked. Then resubmit an Event Log without editing it.

I tried a couple more things last night that didn't yield anything. On a whim, I tried moving the database directory out of the way, and copying an old version in, and that seemed to do the trick; I'm no longer getting the Peeks. I must have messed up something when transferring the database to my new system. I still have the old database (corrupt) directory, and I may play with it at a future data to see what is going on, but right now I'm just happy to be able to make forward progress again.
Thank you all for your help.

Now that you are running on the old database, under Maintenance/Insteon Explorer, check the Enable Pending and Status Scan options in the upper left corner of the Insteon Explorer display. I would expect at least the Status Scan option is not checked. If/when you play with the other database, see whether the Status Scan option is checked in the new database.

Now we are making progress. If you go back to the other DB run the phupg exe before you reuse it.

You are right; the status scan options and enable pending are not checked in the current DB. I was pretty sure I checked and they weren't enabled in the other DB either, but I wouldn't swear to it. When I actually stop being a chicken and pull up the other DB again (things are just working so nicely right now...) I'll check that and then also run phupg.exe to see what that does.
Thanks again for your help.
